Description
Wheatland County, a municipal district in south-central Alberta, approached us in 2017 to design their first Annual Environmental Activity Report. Their goal was to create a professional, engaging publication that would connect with a new generation of readers and stakeholders while reflecting the beauty of their region.
Problem:
When Wheatland County first approached us, their visual resources were minimal — a logo, a small image library, and no existing report to reference. With a clean slate, we had the opportunity to build the design from the ground up, creating a visual language that felt cohesive, professional, and true to their community.
Process
Drawing inspiration from their existing colour palette and a library of stunning landscape photography, we created image-rich spreads that brought the County’s environmental efforts to life. A subtle graphic motif inspired by wheat fields flowed across the pages, symbolizing growth and transition — a nod to the region’s agricultural roots.
Solution:
To make the data approachable and visually engaging, we designed custom infographics and icons that translated complex information into clear, accessible visuals.
The final report was warmly received by the community and became the foundation for future editions, setting a new standard for how the County shares its story.

Our publication design process begins with a deep understanding of the content. We identify key information that can be transformed into compelling visuals—infographics, illustrations, and data highlights that bring clarity and engagement to the page. Once the visual direction is approved, we begin developing these elements while establishing the document’s structure and flow.
For Wheatland County’s Environmental Activity Report, we used their beautiful imagery to showcase the region and tell a visually driven story. A custom wheat pattern was woven throughout the report, guiding readers through each section and adding texture, warmth, and a sense of continuity to the overall design.
-
The infographics were thoughtfully designed to visually communicate the data from Wheatland County’s Environmental Activity Report. Using a clean monoline illustration style and a colour palette drawn from their existing logo, each graphic was crafted to simplify complex information and enhance readability. The result is a series of visuals that break up dense content, engage the reader, and make the data both accessible and memorable.

Our design went on to receive the Applied Arts Community Award in 2018 — a proud recognition of thoughtful, community-centered design.
